Katharina Otto-Bernstein - Absolute Wilson [excerpt] (2006)

>> 11 jul 2009

.
documentary film directed by Katharina Otto-Bernstein about Robert Wilson
.

.
The creative genius of Robert Wilson, one of the most controversial and rule-breaking artists of our era.
His revolutionary stage work has so altered our concept of theater that, as David Byrne says, "it makes... other theater look hopelessly old-fashioned".
Wilson speaks with unprecedented candor about his life. Nothing is left in the shadows, as he discusses his restrictive upbringing, his therapeutic work with disabled children as well as his experiences in the New York avant-garde scene of the 60's & 70's.

..This video is an ensemble piece that contains a collection of experimental performance art pieces by various artists including: LAURIE ANDERSON, DAVID BYRNE, PHILIP GLASS, ARTO LINDSAY (founder of legendary New York No Wave band DNA), between others. The entire video takes place in The Kitchen, a legendary artist's loft in New York City. All the performance pieces are what would be considered Experimental/Avantgarde. The highlights of the "Two Moon July" video are performances by Laurie Anderson, a fantastic running commentary on newspapers, media and film by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne... and this here: a rare performance of an incredible piece by Phillip Glass entitled "Mad Rush".

From Hopi language: a life of killing each other, war as a way of life, "civilized" violence.
"Naqoyqatsi" is the final film from the Hopi's-trilogy by Godfrey Reggio.
Technological globalization that destroys the heterogeneous and the realm of virtual reality dethroned. Technology not as a means or a hope, but as an end in itself, as a way of life... that opens the door to tragedy... of and can not live without it, because everything else ended up with his "civilized" violence.

From Hopi language: powaq = sorcerer + qatsi = life; means an entity, a way of life that consumes the life forces of other beings in order to further its own life.
In the same vein as "Koyaanisqatsi, " "Powaqqatsi" is a film without actors or dialogue. His language is pure image and music. It was filmed in 12 countries on five continents. It shows the world "developing", based on work and production of natural resources, where cultural diversity and sustainable prosperity are stalked by the industrial culture and lifestyle technology (the sorcerer negative). Although the director says it is only a neutral record of how life changes. "... That's all it is. It is neither good nor bad ... "
